Weight Plates

Weight plates are the foundation of any serious lifter's gym. These are the building blocks for your strength-training journey. Like dumbbells, these should last forever, and are something you can add a little at a time to your equipment stack as your strength increases. If you are just starting out, your biggest decision will be what type of plates - the species, if you will - that you are going to use. But do not let this decision hamstring you. Perhaps one of the more noticeable marks of a veteran lifter's gym is the accumulation of several different types of plates in their equipment collection - this marks the many phases and years of their lifting odyssey.

The two basic types of weight plates are commonly referred to as "standard" and "olympic." Standard plates have a one-inch hole and need to be paired with standard-sized equipment (one-inch bars). Olympic plates have a two-inch hole and need to be paired with olympic equipment (two-inch bars). Perhaps somewhat obvious and very critical, but make sure you are properly matching this up when buying weight-lifting equipment.

While you can go all standard or all olympic, many lifters end up having some of both types in their gym, because there are certain exercises that seem to utilize one better over the other.

Within the standard or olympic families, there are then several options to choose from. In addition to color and finish, there are plates that have slots to help with picking them up. There are also plates that have a rubberized coating to help prevent damage to floors and make them quieter.
