Why Is Physical Fitness Important?

Here are some of the more important reasons to workout and get fit. These benefits are well researched, proven, and documented. Some sources are listed at the bottom of this page.

1. Cardiovascular Health
Exercise improves your heart and lungs' ability to circulate oxygen-rich blood throughout your body.

2. Stamina
Exercise can help the body attain a higher level of overall fitness, which then allows us to perform even basic activities - like walking up a set of stairs - more easily.

3. Enhanced Mood
Chemicals are released when exercising that give us an emotional lift. Many people describe this as a state of euphoria - either during or right after they exercise.

4. Better Sleep
Physical activity, especially during the daytime hours, is known to help with falling asleep and staying asleep at night.

5. More Positive Self-Image and Better Confidence
As your body firms and your conditioning improves, the way you look at yourself changes for the better. This frequently carries over into other areas of your life.

6. Improved Mental Function
Physical fitness improves vascular health, which includes the blood supply to the brain.

7. Improved Immune System
Physical activity can help combat a wide range of disease, including high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, osteoporosis, and some cancers. It also elevates the "good cholesterol" known as HDL.

8. Increased Muscular Strength and Flexibility
Almost any workout will add strength and flexibility - and targeted stretching and strength training can help even more. Stronger muscles and better flexibility help us accomplish other physical tasks more easily and decrease our chances of injury when doing so.

9. Better Balance and Coordination
Stronger muscles and better stamina allow us to be more graceful and coordinated, which can also help prevent falls and other accidents.

10. Longevity and Quality of Life
Being fit can help us not only live longer, but live longer in a state of good health.
